  • Scrolling Marquee

Making a scrolling marquee in Flash is quite easy. Because Flash loops every animation, it makes the process so simple to complete. If you would like to see an example of what we are going to create, see here - (stretches to fit browser).

So, open Flash. Change the size of the stage via the properties menu. Set it to around 300x50. Draw a rectangle covering the stage. Select the color you want. Of course if you want a white background, you can just leave the stage as it is. Now create a second layer, and rename it "Text" by right clicking the layer and selecting Properties.

Now, on your Text layer, select the Text tool from the Tools menu. Type your text out, and make sure that it will fit nicely in the box. Now select the selection tool, and click your text that you just wrote. Press F8 on the keyboard, or right click and select "Convert To Symbol".

Select "Movie Clip" and then press the OK button. Now we can animate the text to make it scroll continously. Drag your text using the selectio tool, so it is at the right hand side of the rectangle. Think of the rectangle as a window, as the text passes by the window, it becomes visible. So when it is next to the rectangle, it will not be visible until it is animated. At this point, your stage should look like this:

Now, add a keyframe on frame 90 of your Text frame, by selecting the frame and pressing F6. Make sure to add a keyframe to your other layer too. Now, on frame 90, select your text from the right hand side, and move it over to the left. Now, at frame 90, you should see this:

And at frame 1, your text should still be on the right hand side. Now, right click anywhere in between frame 1 and frame 90 on the Text layer, and select "Create Motion Tween". Now if you play the animation by prssing Control+Enter, you will see the text scroll as it should. The default frames per second is fairly low, so the animation will be very slow. To speed it up, set the FPS to around 30.

That's pretty much it. It's a very basic way to do it, but you can see that it scrolls over and over like a proper scrolling marquee. If you enjoyed this tutorial or encountered problems, please tel us about it on the KowFlash forum so we can help you out.
