This tutorial is going to show you a step by step procedure for drawing a drink glass in Illustrator CS by using mostly the pencil tool and different brush tools. This tutorial will teach you several skills such as drawing figures outlines, adding brush effects, and colouring with transparency. This is a beginner level tutorial, you are merely expected to know the very basics on how to use Illustrator. An example of the outcome of our tutorial could be seen below.

Starting Off - Creating the Glass Outlines
Use the Line Segment Tool
on your toolbar to create the shape below. Make sure the fill on your toolbar is none and set the stroke colour to #BDC0D1 and the stroke Weight to 2.
Select all the outlines on the stage and select a thick calligraphy brush as shown below to give the lines more volume.
We will draw the straw using the Rectangle Tool. Start by creating one long rectangle and then another shorter one, you will have to then rotate and move them around to get the shape shown below. Connect both rectangles using the pencil tool for the outline and the Line Segment Tool for the small lines on the curve. Set the colour to #A23E2DC . You can also optionally add more lines inside the straw the same way I did.
Creating the Orange Slice Outline and Applying Brush Strokes
Select the Ellipse Tool , set the stroke colour to #E2A317 and draw the inner circle, set then the color to #E0E014 and draw the second circle.
Use the Erase Tool to remove the line inside the front circle and then move your two circles over your glass.
We are done creating the outlines for our orange slice and will now apply the brush stokes. Keep both of the circles selected and then access the Brushes panel and select the brush highlighted in the image below.
The outlines of your orange slice should look similar to the image below, but of course without the stuff inside it. Use the pencil tool to draw an irregularly shaped circle after selecting a narrow stroke and a #F9F695 colour for the fill. Set the opacity of this circle to 85%. Use the Line Segment tool with the stroke weight set to 2 and colour #E0E014 to draw the lines inside.
Colouring the Inside of the Glass
We are going to colour the inside of our glass using strokes of various colours and transparencies. Select the pencil tool, set the stroke colour to none. Now use the shades of #BED9ED (Light blue) and white to create random pieces of colour inside the glass. Play with the colour opacities to create a more interesting outcome. You can also use a white stroke for the pencil tool and draw several lines across the side of the glass to give it more depth.
We will now add some juice to our glass. Use the pencil tool again to draw a fill only on the inside, set the colour to #E8AAE8, the opacity to 30%. Once you create your first fill of juice, create a very similar object on top of it in a different colour, colour the second one #C8DCED and set its opacity to 15%. You can also add some small streaks of white on the side of the glass to add some more depth to it.
We now need to move to the tiny fizzes and ice cubes. Remove the fill and use only the stroke with the colour #CC4BE2 to create small bubbles using the Ellipse tool. Hold Shift while drawing to create perfect circles. You can then create the ice cubes by drawing random shapes using the pencil tool with the fill colour set to white and the opacity set to 30%.
We will now draw some outlines for our ice cubes. Use the pencil tool with a higher opacity stroke to draw some outlines around them. You can also use a hint of light blue over them for a more colourful look.
We need to add another layer on to our glass to make our fizzes and ice cubes seem 'inside' the drink. We will do this by creating two semi-random shapes and then place these two shapes above our 'juice'. Draw the first one in purple #E8AAE8 and an opacity of 30%. The other one should be in blue #C8DCED and an opacity of 15%. When you finish drawing these simply place over the juice.
You should end up with something similar to this:
Drawing the Cherries
We are going to add cherries, the final element to add to our glass. Using the Ellipse tool, draw a circle while holding down the Shift key. Use #E26447 for the fill, #AF2734 for the stroke, and set the opacity to 55%. Change the brush type to whatever you find most appropriate for this effect.
Copy and paste this cherry to create 5 copies. Place them as shown in the image below.
We are at the very final step of our tutorial, we will add a little glow and shade to our cherry. Use the pencil tool to make some circular irregular shapes as shown below. Use white strokes for the glow and darker red ones for the shade, experiment with different opacity levels to acquire a result you are satisfied with. I also added some leaves using the pencil tool.
You should now have something very similar to what we have below.
