  • How to make Smoggy clouds in Illustrator

    Author: 2008-07-09 07:43:20 From:

And welcome to my first tutorial. I used this site a lot to inspire me making things. So i thought to do something back. I could not find a decent tutorial for making these clouds so i thought well lets make one.
If you know a little about illustrator you should be able to follow this one. I tried to explain everything as good as possible. But if you still have som questions you can alwase ask ofcourse!

Ok lets start. First of all you should open illustrator -> create new!

    2

    Follow up:

    1

The image you get should be something like this. You can enter you own width and height according to how big it should be. Also be free of choise to change the advanced options!

First thing to do after you have clicked OK, should be this:

    2

Go to View and then click snap to grid. this will make it a lot easier to get the good size. Probably your grid preferenceses will be different than mine so thats the next thing we change.

    3

This menu you can find under Edit -> preferences. Since our units are pixels you should enter something like i did. To get the same effect.

Ok enought settings, we can finally start. First select the Rectangle tool. And draw a rectangle like this. There is only a fill and no stroke. So just select a fill colour you like and 'disable' the stroke.

    4

For the next step we use the Direct Selection tool. We select the first rectangle, And while we have selected it we press alt to copy it. You may also want to press shift to place to copy directly under the original.

    5

After you copied the original, keep pressing ctrl d. This repeats the previous step over and over again. Which will spare you lots and lots of time. If you've done it correctly you should get something simulair!

    6

So our base is ready, now we need to add the clouds. First create a new layer by clikcing the following symbol. (the V-sign)

    7

In that new layer create a circle. This circle should be perfectly round,. Keep while draging the circel the shift key, to get it perfectly round shaped!

    8

The next step is done in the same way as the with the lines. First select the circel, press alt to copy and thereafter press ctrl d to do it several times. If you are done horizontally, select them al and do the same vertically. Mine looks like this:

    9

After you have several circels you want them to be different. Go to: Object->Transfrom->Transform each. This option lets you change the size of every single circel. And for a good nice cloud that is what we want!

    10

The Transform Each menu looks like this. Try out a little to what meets you preferences. Click Random and Preview to see the result

    11

After you have transformed them each you can move them seperatly and place them how you like them to be. Since you have bigger and smaller ones you get a cool effect. After i played arround a little with the circels my outcome what this: Probably yours will look different!

    12

Ok now you have the cloud shape you like, add all the circels to 1 group you can do this by selecting them all and press ctrl g or go to the object menu and there clock group. The black lines should also be grouped. This will make it easier later on.

    13

In the next image i added a brown background. This is easilly done by making a new layer and sending that layer to the back. In my layers menu you can see how it should be.
    14

Ok, were almost done. Select the pathfinder menu (can be done by: Window-> pathfinder) Select both the circle layer and the stiped layer. (which should select all since we have grouped them serperately)

    15

Click on the Intersect Shape Area's (the v-sign). Illustrator will automatically intersect the shapes for us what will give us the desired effect.

    16

Mine looks like this. I hipe yours looks simulair. Then you have done it correcly.

    17

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. ((floque.nl))
