  • Spinning Square Illusion

    Author: 2007-12-03 10:37:58 From:

Alright, this is a pretty easy tutorial but it requires some basic knowledge of imageready, I will try to include some basic instructions, but if you don't understand them you might want to read some basic animation tutorials.

Here is what I will be making. Its an optical illusion which makes the square seem to change sizes, when its really not.

    Alright, lets start.

Step 1) Go to File>New and create a document any size you want, I will be doing 250x250 and fill the background with black.

Step 2) Now make a new layer and use the rectangular marquee tool to make a selection like this, and fill it with white.

    selection

Step 3) Now duplicate that layer (Ctrl+J) and rotate it 90 degrees (Edit>Transform>rotate 90 degrees CW) and position it so you have a giant plus sign.

Step 4) Now make a new layer(below the two white rectangles but above the background) and make a large orange square(do the same thing as step 2, but make a square and make it orange). Here is what you should have so far.

    so far 1

Step 5) Now save just incase anything goes wrong later on (always remember to save every so often). Now we are going to go over to Image Ready by clicking the little "photoshop to imageready" icon at the bottom of the side-toolbar. Once in imageready, make sure that the animation pallete is visible. If not, go to Windows>animation.

Step 6) In imageready, look at the layer pallete and select your orange square, duplicate that layer (Ctrl+J) 5 times. After you duplicate the layers, click the eye beside them so none of them are showing except your original square.

Step 7) Now, in the animation window, click the "duplicate current frame" button (pictured below).

animation window Step 8) Now in your layers pallete, click the eye next to your original square and select the first copy of your orange square. Hit Ctrl+T and put your cursor a little above the top right of the selection and then hold shift and rotate the square one time to the right.(also pictured below)

Step 9) Now repeat steps 7-8 for each copy of the square. Though this time in step 8, click the eye next to the previous square so only one square is showing per frame.

Step 10) Once your done, do File>Save Optimized as and save your file as a gif.

Step 11) Below is what your animation window should look like once you are finished. All that is left is to change the delay for the frames so they go slower. Click the bottom of each frame where it shows 0.0 seconds and change it to 0.1

Step 12) Your done! congratulations! If you have any troubles just contact me and I will try to resolve them.
