Start out by creating a new document at 300x299. Create a new layer with a white backgrond and add noise. Go to Filter/Noise/Add Noise, and fill in with the amount of 70.

Go to Filter/Blur/Motion Blur with 0 as the angle, and 30 as the distance.

Go to Filter/Distort/Wave with the following settings:
Number of Generators: 5
Wavelength: Minimum - 1; Maximum - 120
Amplitude: Minimum - 5; Maximum - 35
Scale: Horiz. - 100; Vert. - 7
Type: Sine
Undefined Areas: Repeat Edge Pixels

Go to Filter/Sharpen/Unsharpen Mask with the following settings:
Amount: 500
Radius: 2.0
Threshold: 0

Finally, we need to add color. For your foreground, choose the color #b07452. Create a new layer and fill that layer with this color. Now, change the blending mode to Color. Now we have the texture for the log.

Create a rectangle shape with your marquee tool, and copy the texture.

With your elliptical marquee tool, create a circle at the front and at the end, do a merged copy with Ctrl+Shift+C and paste.

Bring the texture layers back on and change the blending mode for the rectangle layer and the left circle(the end of the log), change it to Multiply. Merge Copy and paste.

For the front circle layer, ctrl+select it, go to Filter/Blur/Radial Blur with the following settings:
Amount: 50
Blur Method: Spin
Quality: Good

You've just created a log.
