You've seen those images, where the main focus is coloured and the background is in black and white? The purpose of this tutorial is to show you how to recreate that effect on any photograph you choose. It's best to use a photo which has a bright central focus.
STEP ONE
Start by opening Adobe Photoshop, when opened it should look like the following image-
With this, find an image from Google or something, I'm going to do this with a Clown Fish, they're bright and colourful. Found your image? Great! Copy the picture and create a new canvas on Photoshop, do this by going File> New. The dimensions should be automatically the ones of your picture. A white page should appear, paste the image onto the canvas by hitting the keys "control" and "V".
STEP TWO
Now you've got your image on your canvas, there should be two layers, a background layer and "Layer 1" which will be the one you work on.
This is how your workspace should look now, but with your image, not mine. Now you need to select the focus of your image, this is the part you want to keep in colour. To do this you'll need to use the "lasso" tool, select this by pressing the "L" key on your keyboard. Click on the outline of your image and drag your mouse all around the outline. Only let go once you've reached the start point. Then you should have an army of "marching ants" outlining the image focus, like this-
Now you've selected your focus.
STEP THREE
The task now is to invert your selection so that the portion of the image that you want to turn black and white is selected. To do this go to Select> Inverse this inverts the selection. Now, desaturate your image, to do this go Image> Adjustments> Desaturate.
Now, you should have your final image!
