  • Design an incredible fiery text effect

    Author: 2009-10-23 04:09:28 From:

A good text effect can have a positive outcome on a piece of art work by giving the piece more interest and movement. The types of text effects you can use are endless and different concepts can be used for various types of design. For example a wooden looking text effect could work great for a nature styled design or a bubble looking text could look perfect for an aquarium like design.

Today I want to teach you how to easily create and incredible and interesting fiery text effect that can be used for various types of websites and designs.

    So let’s get started.

    Step 1: Prepare and begin

Begin by creating a new document in Photoshop. The size is up to you, based on what you will use this effect for, but I will use the size 500px wide by 500px high.

    1

Now fill the background of this document with the colour #1d1d1d, which is a dark gray. We don’t want the background to look plain, so we will include a small amount of noise to it. Do this by navigating to the top menu bar click Filter > Noise > Add Noise.

    2

Now you should be looking at the Add Noise menu that appears. Insert these settings:

    3

Upon adding the above settings, click on Ok to save your changes, and your background should now look like this:

    4

    Step 2: Creating the text

It is time to begin adding our text and working the effect, so create a new layer and be sure to set your foreground colour to black (#000000). Select your type tool, change the font to Arial Black and set the font size to 72 and be sure that the font colour is set to black.

    5

It is up to you as to what the text will say, but for the tutorial I will just be using “TTab”, so type your text in the middle of the page.

    6

Next we want to rasterize the type so that we can edit it anyway we like. You can do this by right clicking on the layer and click on Rasterize Type from the drop down menu.

    7

    Step 3: Make it 3D

The next step of this tutorial is to change the perspective of the text and make it 3D. So first lets change the perspective by navigating the top menu bar and clicking on Edit > Transform > Perspective.

    8

Now your text will have a wire frame around it with small boxes on the corners and middles. Now drag the top right corner downwards a few pixels like the image below:

    9

Now you can double click on the text to save the changes to the perspective.

Your text should now look like this:

    10

Time to make this text 3D which can be done many different ways but we will do it through the use of duplicated layers.
Now duplicate your text layer by right clicking on it in the layers panel and click on duplicate. Using the left arrow key move the duplicated layer left by one click (1 Pixel). Now duplicate the duplicated layer and move it left by 1 pixel. Continue this process until you have 5 duplicated layers plus the original layer.

Your text will now look a little bit bulkier like the following:

    11

We now need to merge the duplicated layers but NOT the original text layer. To do this go to your layers palette, hold in “Ctrl” and click on each of the duplicated layers.

    12

Remember NOT to click on the original text layer.
Now, with your duplicated layers selected hit “Ctrl + e” to merge your layers. If this does not work you can click on “Layer” from the top menu bar and the click on “Merge Layers” from the drop down menu.

Next we need to change the order of our layers. Drag merged layer underneath the original text layer in your layers palette like I have done in the below image:

    13

    Step 4: Add some depth

Open the blending options menu for the merged layer (bottom text layer), do this by right clicking on the layer from the layers palette and click on “Blending Options” from the drop down menu.
Once inside the Blending Options window click on “Gradient Overlay” from the left hand side menu and enter the following settings:

    14

After completing that click on Ok to save your changes, your text should now look like the following:

    15

Next we want to add some Blending to the original text layer so right click on the original text layer and select “Blending Options” from the drop down menu.
From the Blending Options menu click on “Outer Glow” from the left hand side menu and enter the following settings:

    16

Now click on “Gradient Overlay” from the left hand side menu and enter the following settings:

    17

Now click on “Ok” to save your changes and your text should now look like the following:

    18

    Step 5: Add some flare

In this step we will add some colour and the fire like effect to the text which will give a great outcome.

Hold down the “Ctrl” button and click on the small image of the original text layer in the layers palette to select it like so:

    19

Now while the text is selected create a new layer. Set your foreground colour to orange (#ffa200) and using the Rectangle Tool fill the selection like the following:

    20

Now make sure the new layer is selected, navigate to the top menu bar and click on Filter > Blur > Radial Blur. Once inside the radial blur menu enter the following settings:

    21

Click on Ok to save your changes.
Now set the layer style to colour dodge:

    22

Your text should now look like the following:

    23

Now we want to duplicate that last layer we just created (the orange blurred text), we can do this by right clicking on the layer in the layers palette and selecting “Duplicate Layer” from the drop down menu.
Make sure the newly duplicated layer is selected, navigate to the top menu bar and click on Filter > Distort > Ripple.
Once inside the Ripple options window insert the following settings:

    24

Then click on Ok to save your changes.

And that is it, you have successfully created an incredible fiery text effect. Your end result should look like this:
