In this tutorial I will be showing you how to create realistic looking wood in Adobe Photoshop, I will be using Photoshop CS3 but the version should not have an effect on the outcome. This tutorial can be used to make backgrounds or textures for objects and is a relatively easy tutorial to follow.
Step 1.
Alright, first thing that you have to do is create a new file (File>New) make mine will be set to 500px * 500px but the size depends on what you want to do with the wood after. Now you have to select the bucket tool and fill the layer with a lightish brown, I used #6e4922. Now you should have something that looks similar to this:

Step 2.
Now duplicate layer 1, the brown layer and add noise (Filter>Noise>Add noise) you should use the same settings as shown in the image below.

Step 3.
Go to Filters>Blur>Motion Blur and use the settings shown below:

Step 4.
Now change thwe fill percentage of the later from 100% to 20%.
Step 5.
Now create a new layer, go to the gradient contol panel and make a gradient like this :

Now apply a gradient from the top down like this:

Step 6.
Get the rectangle marquee tool and cut little parts of the gradient out like this:

Step 7.
Now add a Gaussian blur, use these settings:

You should now have something similar to this:

Step 8.
Duplicate the layer and add it to the bottom like so it looks something like this:

Now you’re finished and you’ve created a realistic wood texture in Adobe Photoshop.
