In Adobe® Premiere® Pro, you can use the Audio Mixer window to record a voiceover directly onto an audio track.

1¡¢Connect the microphone.
Connect the audio source or microphone to the sound input port on your computer or sound card.
To confirm that the microphone is properly connected, you can record a short test clip in another audio application such as Sound Recorder, which comes with Windows XP.
2¡¢Activate the appropriate sequence.
If your project contains multiple sequences, activate the sequence in which you want to record audio, by clicking its tab in the Timeline window.

3¡¢Add a track for recording the voiceover.
Choose Sequence > Add Tracks. In the Audio Tracks section, type 1 for the Add option, select an option for Track Placement, and select Mono for Track Type if youâ™re using a monophonic microphone. Type 0 for the Add option for Video Tracks and Submix Tracks. (If you canâ™t see the new track in the Audio Mixer window, make the window wider. If you added a mono track to a stereo sequence, itâ™s probably the only track that has a single VU meter.)
You can record on any audio track, but creating a new one ensures that you donâ™t accidentally overwrite existing clips.

4¡¢Set the recording start time.
Position the current-time indicator a few seconds before the time when you want the voiceover to begin (to give yourself time to start speaking). You can do this in the Timeline window or by editing the timecode in the top left corner of the Audio Mixer window.

5¡¢Enable recording for the track and the sequence.
In the Audio Mixer window, click the Record Enable button for the track in which you plan to record the voiceover. (The Record Enable button looks like a microphone and is the third button in the row of buttons directly above a trackâ™s volume fader.) If you have multiple audio input devices, make sure that the audio device connected to the microphone is chosen in the pop-up menu above the Record Enable button. Now click the Record button for the sequence (the round red button at the bottom of the Audio Mixer window).
The Record button arms the sequence for recording but doesnâ™t start recording.

6¡¢Test input levels.
Choose Meter Input(s) Only in the Audio Mixer window menu. Test the input levels by speaking into the microphone and watching the level meters for the microphoneâ™s track. Make sure that the sound levels approach 0 db as closely as possible without entering the red area. (When you finish testing levels, you may want to deselect Meter Input(s) Only in the Audio Mixer window menu.)
If you arenâ™t seeing any signal in the level meter, it might be necessary to choose Edit > Preferences > Audio Hardware to configure the input device. The exact settings you need depend on your audio hardware. Adobe Premiere Pro supports the ASIO (Audio Stream Input Output) standard, so if your audio hardware conforms to the ASIO standard, you can use the Audio Hardware preferences in Adobe Premiere Pro to make sure that the driver for your device is selected. If a driver isnâ™t available for your device, Adobe Premiere Pro uses its own ASIO driver (Adobe Default Windows Sound).

7¡¢Record the voiceover.
Get ready to start speaking. Click the Play button at the bottom of the Audio Mixer window, and then start speaking. When you finish recording the voiceover, click the Stop button. The voiceover appears as a new audio clip in the audio track and in the Project window.
To help time the voiceover properly, you can watch the video play back in the Program view of the Monitor window.
