    1.What is a 4-split screen?

    tutorial4_1

Example of a 4-split screen can be seen in Singing Dog 2. It is basically 4 clips playing at the same time (see picture on the left). Other variations of a split screen, for example a 3-split screen are more difficult to do and will be discussed in other tutorials.

This tutorial is written for Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 users. If anyone knows how to make this in any other programs or any other way, please contact me and I will add your tutorial/comment or a link to it.

    2. Preparing the Source

    tu4_2

Open Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0. Select the project you are working on or make a New Project. If you have not imported the source file yet, do it by: File -> Import -> select a clip you want -> Open.

Now select the "source" window. When selected, its border is highlited with orange, the way it is on the picture on the left. Now click on the source file you have imported and dragdropp it into the "Source" window the way it is shown with the red arrow.

    3. Creating the Clips

tutorial4_3 For a 4-split screen you will need 4 clips that will be playing at the same time. To create a clip from the source file you have to set the starting and ending point. Slide the blue pointer to the chosen starting point and click on the green marked button, then slide the pointer to the chosen ending point and click on the red marked button.

    4. Draging the Clips Into the Timeline

tutorial4_4 Select the clip you created by clicking on the "Source" window and then dragdrop it into the Timeline (Video 1), like it is shown on the picture on the left. The clip should appear in the "Program" window.
Now repeat the 1.3 step to create three more clips and drag them to the the Timeline (Video 2,3 and 4). If you want, you can use the same clip more then one time.
Note: with each clip you will get an audio, you can mute an unneeded audio by clicking on the "speaker" icon.

    5. Resizing the Clips

tutorial4_5 Each clip will need to be resized to 50% of its size. You can do that manually by clicking on the clip's edge and draging it inwards (hold shift to maintain the aspect ratio).
Another way is to use "Effects Controls" window -> Motion -> Scale -> set the pointer to 50,0.
Scale all four clips to 50% as it is shown on the picture on the left.

    6. Positioning the clips

Drag the clips toward the center so they each make a forth of the window. With that you will create a 4-split screen as it is shown on the first picture of this tutorial.

    7. Exporting the Movie

I recommend you export the raw movie - select .avi when exporting. (File -> Export -> Movie) and then convert the file to either divx (.avi) or .wma, .mov etc. with another program. But you can also use Adobe Media Encoder (File -> Export -> Adobe Media Encoder).

    8.Example

I put the Lion's Roar at the beginning of Singing Dog, Dancing Birds and Singing Dog 2. If you want, you can watch or download them by clicking on the links below.
