    Step 1. Install protocol:

    Windows 2000:    (win98  Or  winXP)

    • Right click networking neighborhood on the desktop go to properties.


            

    • Select your network interface right click and go to properties
    • Click the install button, select protocol and then ADD

     

    • Select the protocol you want to use. (you will need the windows CD), if you selected netbeui skip this step.
    • If you selected TCP/IP you will need to decide if you want to assign IP addresses manually or dynamically.

      if you decide to assign IP addresses with a DHCP server skip this step.


    To assign the IP address manually:

    • Right click networking neighborhood on the desktop go to properties.
    • Select your network interface right click and go to properties.
    • Click TCP/IP from the list and click properties button.
    • Check the use following IP address
    • Enter a private IP address. (e.g. IP 192.168.2.* ---- subnet 255.255.255.0).
    • If u are connected to a router for internet access enter the IP of its local interface as the default gateway make sure that its in the same range. If you are not using a router leave this blank.
    • Enter 127.0.0.1 in primary DNS or enter routers IP address




     

    Step 2. Install client services:

    • The services should already be installed, but if its not:
    • Right click networking neighborhood on the desktop go to properties
    • Select your network interface right click and go to properties.
    • Click the install button, select client and ADD. Then choose "Client for Microsoft".
    • Also make sure File and print sharing is checked.

    Step 3. Test TCP\IP

    Click START >> select RUN >> type in cmd.

    At the dos prompt type ping 127.0.0.1. Your result should look like this:


    If you don't see this screen then try the steps again. If it works then ping the IP you assigned (e.g. ping 192.168.2.2) if you get the same results then TCP/IP is setup correctly.

    Step 4. Setup workgroup.

    • Right click "My computer", go to Properties.
    • Network Identification Tab, then properties.
    • Enter "computer name", then in Member of:
    • Click "workgroup" radio button.
    • You will need to restart.

    Step 5. Create a User account

    (make sure you create a user account with the same Name & Password on the other machines).

    • Right click "My Computer" go to Manage.


              

    • In the Computer Management console select "local users & groups".
    • Right click users select New user.
    • Enter username and password.
